This article series or blog series are shared thoughts or transcribed bits from open and organic conversations I have held in web 3.0 twitter spaces and discord servers. It are these thoughts and conversations that have led to the formulation of the Four Pillar Approach — a theory on NFT valuation.

As a community manager who’s been on the Internet for a long time and is now witnessing the web3 boom, my advice to everyone is: it’s so important to shape a community around yourself, no matter if you’re new to the space or have been around a while.

Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe. In due time you’ll surround yourself with a nice group of people that share your ideology, but also contest your beliefs. There are many places where you can browse through plentiful vibes to find your tribe and settle.

Discord is a very powerful tool in all of this. It is a market leader in community hosting and if you have dismissed it previously, I wholeheartedly recommend it. As someone who has been hosting communities there for 6 plus years. Give it a shot; join a few communities, integrate and make friends because then you can make new communities with these friends which are tailored to your tastes. If Discord does not suit your tastes, Telegram is an excellent alternative.

Broadly speaking, there are two archetypes of people in this space. There are speculators and settlers. The speculators are the people here to speculate about price and to make monthly profits. But short term profits do not drive innovation. It is the appreciation for the technology and desire to unlock its potential that really get good organic conversations going. The settlers are the people that not only speculate about the prize, but they align themselves with the beliefs of projects, experiences or just the technology as it is — they apply themselves directly by contributing to the value being created. I recommend that you find these people, the innovators, the thinkers and the people with a long-term vision.

Online communities of people are essential to the future of the decentralized internet. No longer is your geographical location important to who you engage with. Your mutuals, your friends & your network. Relationships established through purely digital interaction are just as valid as through physical interaction.

As online communities are becoming ever more prevalent and important, so does the superstar community manager. Your grumpy forum moderators. You’re talented engagers. People pleasers & strong leaders. The people that dare to speak up for the interest of a group of people instead of the interest of themselves. This new profession that is now becoming ever increasingly relevant

When evaluating a community, do not look at raw numbers or size. As the size of a community does not reflect its health nor success. The important markers to measure communities by are:

  • Ratio of total members and weekly active members
  • Active text and voice channels around the clock
  • New member retention ratio
  • Welcoming atmosphere vs. elitist exclusivity (healthy community culture)
  • Moderation & Automation of Engagement (premium bots)
  • Planned events and voice activity
  • Server art, banners & custom stickers & emoji’s

At the end of the day, if online communities are not managed by people that are competent & caring, they’re going to stagnate and fall apart. We need those stable communities to enable stable progression and evolution in this space.
